Destroy and Rebuild

This is the second room. We always begin with demolition. This is the kitchen and and bathroom. We are removing the lanoleum flooring, bathroom tiles and cabinets, kitchen cabinets, part of the interior wall on the right. Emily wasted no time in jack hammering the tiles off this Bathroom wall. She will do very well when she goes to the other islands to work with the Kingdom Hall construction crew. Micki puts up drywall while Jason begins laying out the walls for plastering. He is figuring the lowest and highest points. The eletricians worked closely with us to first demo the old electrical wiring which needed updating and to install new wiring. We had to jack hammer out the channels for the wiring in the walls and the ceiling. Plastering the walls is the messiest part of the job, it requiers a lot of team effort and cleanup during and after the process, we took turns mixing and cleaning up. As you can see in the picture above the rough original texture is hard to match when doing any renovations. Smooth walls look cleaner and are easy to match. this is the new smooth texture walls before we sand it to a smooth finish. Below is room seven after we have painted and installed the tile floors. A lot of prep work was also done in the carpenters shop. All the Luan Doors that we saved had to be sanded and prepped for painting. Also Mike designed and cut and drilled all the holes and slots for the closet systems that will be assembled in all four rooms. At least two months of work. How many volunteers does it take to sand one door? Well when you have 28 doors, 2 sides each totaling 56 sides....it takes a lot of hands and dusty fingers. Below we can see Mike spray polyurethane on trim that's been cut and sanded for the bathroom and front entry doors. Then we dry them on drying racks that he built. The funny dolphin looking fins are actually brackets for the closets. I think there are 90 pieces that had to be designed on paper, cut out of sheets of compressed wood, sanded, holes drilled into them and finally painted. The call went out for volunteers and this is Shem's first day at work with us. He is drilling holes in the closet poles then smoothing out any rough edges. Mike is designing a little table for the router to cut edging on our tile base. This will be installed in the rooms as base above the floor tile. After all the doors receive their initial paint, they must be sanded again, then painted one or two more times. Above is Melody, Keith and Roseanna. Melody and Keith also work with the Kingdom Hall construction crew. They, like us, save up their money to go on these projects. They just spent 9 days in Kosrae preparing a rented hotel that had been abandoned after a typhoon caused damage to it. The rest of the construction crew will be going there sometime after they finish there current project in Saipan. Greg and Ellie cut and polish the granite counter top. Greg and his wife Christine relocated here to help out in the ministry with the Chinese group, you should here Greg speak Chinese, it boggles the mind. Below is Jared and Dawn. They just arrived last week from Wisconsin. They closed their business, sold their equipment and vehicles to move here to be used wherever there is a need. At home he installed tile and Dawn worked in an attorney's office. The kitchen backsplash with granite inset was their first assignment. Next he installed the tile base. Dawn, is no bystander. She jumped in immediately cutting tile. Plumbing is going in too. Its nice to see a plan come together. The closets will be easy to install and easier to use. Stay tune for the finishing touches.....upcoming is lighting and fixtures.
